Lamayuru is a small village located in the Leh district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, and is known for its ancient Buddhist monastery, the Yungdrung (Swastika) Lamayuru Monastery.
The monastery is considered one of the oldest and most important in the region, and is said to have been founded in the 10th century AD by the famous Indian scholar Rinchen Zangpo.
The village is also known for its lunar landscape, which is characterized by a barren, rocky terrain and distinctive formations of eroded rock. This unique landscape, combined with the ancient monastery, makes Lamayuru a popular destination for visitors interested in Buddhism, trekking and photography. The village is also considered as a gateway for the trek to the popular Markha valley trek and for the trek to the base of the Nun-Kun peaks.
In recent years, Lamayuru has become more popular as a tourist destination, and many visitors come here to experience the tranquility of the village, the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the rich cultural heritage of the region.
