Magnetic Hill is a gravity hill located near Leh in the Indian state of Ladakh. It is situated on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, at an altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level. The hill is known for its optical illusion, where cars appear to roll uphill in defiance of gravity.
This is due to the layout of the surrounding area which creates an illusion of a downhill slope when in fact the road is actually uphill.
According to local legend, the hill has magnetic properties that pull vehicles uphill. However, this is a scientific phenomenon known as a gravity hill, which is caused by the alignment of the road in relation to the surrounding landscape. Visitors can experience this phenomenon by parking their cars on the designated spot on the road and switching off the engine. The vehicle will appear to roll uphill on its own. Many tourists visit this place to experience this phenomenon and take pictures, and it also considered as one of the major tourist attraction in Ladakh.
